Broadcast News Writing

Objective: to practice the basic principles of broadcast writing and reporting and to orally present stories in the format of a radio newscast
Requirements:
Using on-line newspaper websites (like theeagle.com, cnn.com, usatoday.com), rewrite two stories using broadcast style. Remember that broadcast style requires a cause-effect organization, problems-solutions-results organization, or comparison organization. Be concise and write short simple sentences in active voice. Use present tense if possible. Dates usually aren't needed but focus on what happened today or yesterday. Use phonetic spellings of confusing names or words. Eliminate unnecessary words from your sentences and keep the copy to 15 to 180 words for a minute of broadcast news. Be prepared to read your copy aloud, so print and practice.
